How Do I Paint a Brick Wall? or Stucco? Why paint your brick? People choose to paint their homes if the brick is damaged or is of inferior quality. White stains and areas of discolored brick can be eye sores that beg to be cleaned up and covered. What to use: 100% outdoor acrylic house paint. Some are marked for specific projects. A high-quality, acrylic latex paint with excellent hiding properties. Interior/exterior, self-priming, mildew resistant finish also provides excellent adhesion and water repellency on properly prepared interior or exterior smooth, rough and textured masonry, stucco and brick surfaces. Specific water-based formulas are designed to accentuate all textured surfaces while achieving a natural look. It is alkali-resistant, easy to apply, lasts 20 years in all climatic conditions and cleans up with soap and water. Setup First Clean up first! White staining that occurs on brick as a result of salt deposits. When water interacts with the brick the salt inside the material dries and stains. These stains can be difficult to remove and will not usually disappear permanently with plain water. Use a stiff brush or you can use a diluted formula of muriatic acid. Follow warnings and use gloves and the proper applicators. Depending on the color you choose you do not have to be perfect in removing all stains. Using a scraper, widen cracks that are preexisting. Eliminate the dust in the brick with a brush and/or power vacuum device or power washer. Seal the cracks with 100% acrylic or siliconized acrylic caulk. You made need to repeat the application three to five hours later if needed. If there are joints that need mending re-point them as well. Be sure that the chimney caps have no cracks or holes in them. You can also use a professional CONCRETE CLEANER & DEGREASER solution. If you have mildew on your brick use a bleach solution on the surface. A generic household version of bleach will work. Leave the solution on the brick for 15 minutes or so. Remove the treated mildew with a stiff brush. Prime and Spray 2 levels of top coats
